Origins of OpenWater

The OpenWater project was a group project for an Instructional Technology class at Utah State University. The assignment, given by Professor David Wiley, had three objectives:

1. It has to teach something.

2. It has to be “cool.”

3. It has to show something that would not have been possible without “open” educational materials.

The third objective was a major focus of the project. About 75% of the material used in OpenWater is remixed or used from other sources licensed under public domain or creative commons. The remaining 25% is original footage that was shot by the OpenWater team. It is the team’s hope that this video will show how important and useful it is to have content available to everyone.

The Future of OpenWater

Although there are no immediate plans to add to OpenWater, the creative commons license allows anyone to use and change it, as long as it is properly attributed. Hopefully, this video will become part of educational courses and lessons throughout the United States. Perhaps, someone will change it to suit their specific needs. Whatever the use, we hope that this video will help people become aware of the importance of pure water in an emergency.
